The original PageRank algorithm was described by Lawrence Page and Sergey Brin in several publications. I really enjoyed the series, start at the introduction and read them all if you have the time.

“Contrary to the concept of link popularity, PageRank is not simply based upon the total number of inbound links. The basic approach of PageRank is that a document is in fact considered the more important the more other documents link to it, but those inbound links do not count equally. First of all, a document ranks high in terms of PageRank, if other high ranking documents link to it.

So, within the PageRank concept, the rank of a document is given by the rank of those documents which link to it. Their rank again is given by the rank of documents which link to them. Hence, the PageRank of a document is always determined recursively by the PageRank of other documents. Since - even if marginal and via many links - the rank of any document influences the rank of any other, PageRank is, in the end, based on the linking structure of the whole web. Although this approach seems to be very broad and complex, Page and Brin were able to put it into practice by a relatively trivial algorithm.”

Kim Malone, The President of Google AdSense reveals that Google is now using AdWords conversion data to combat adsense spam sites.

On an Arbitrage Issues panel in San Jose, Kim Malone was asked specifically what steps Google is taking to stop the MFA (Made For Adsense) websites. This question was posed right after Kim was shown an example of how a person clicked on a Google Adwords ad and the person was taken to 5 different MFA Adsense pages before ever actually reaching the content. Basically the person had to click on 6 total Google Adsense ads before they could actually get to the real content because each ad just led to another page with no content but more Google Adsense ads.

Google continues to expand in Microsoft’s backyard. The Internet search giant, which opened a sales office in Fremont three months ago and a development center in Kirkland in 2004, is now taking a serious look at gobbling up nearly all of a 20-story office building under construction in downtown Bellevue.

While deciding to do a mass bid update this morning, a member of our team noticed something awry within the Yahoo Search Marketing interface (DTC)…usually the menu features a “Bid to Position” option, now it is “Bid to Influence Position” - this was on content match bids.

Yahoo accidental release of Panama functionality on DTC

We are guessing the rollout to the new bid platform (long rumored to be “Panama) has just begun. Bid Rank, (presumed to be CPC) x Click-Through Rate = “listing’s position” (Ad Rank). No longer does CPC solely influence your positioning, just like Google.
