Just a thought.

Perhaps MS should consider, as an alternative to $80 billion Y! price tag.

Don't get me wrong. MS buying Y! could still be a reality. However here's a different idea that MS could consider.

MS should, in my opinion, purchase IAC Media (parent company to Ask.com). IAC includes Expedia.com, Hotels.com, Gifts.com, TicketMaster... Not to mention Excite, Ask, MyWay, FunWebProducts. Home Shopping Network. Microsoft may spend close to the same as Y! but end up with a ton more stuff without gaining an entire portal on top of Windows Live and MSN.

With Ask, they get a quality search algorithm, trusted by sites that do not have search powered by Google or Yahoo already. Sites like Lycos.

On top of Ask, they get FunWebProducts. Smiley Central is the core product of FWP. I am amazed Microsoft doesn't already have a stamp on something like that. PopSwatter, CurserMania, and a few other things also in that line... all under MS.

Ask is, in my view, a sitting duck out there in the SEM pond. Not one of the big three but still has an impressive array of products that may place MS back in the race.

I could be naive, so if I'm wrong, let me know.
